After The Bell Program
For most kids, the last day of school marks the start of carefree summer days filled with sunshine, laughter, and friends. But for others, it signals the end of crucial in-school meal programs that support their growing bodies. That's why, for the past six years, the Battlefords District Food & Resource Centre (BDFRC) has proudly partnered with Food Banks Canada to offer the After the Bell program.
After the Bell delivers child-friendly, nutritious food packs to food banks, allowing young people to take home food to fill the gap when other supports—like school breakfast or lunch programs—aren’t available.
This summer, BDFRC partnered with KidsFirst and Dream Brokers to distribute child-friendly food bags and fresh produce to 105 children facing food insecurity for eight weeks. These nutritious food packs, filled with items like shelf-stable milk, hummus, crackers, cereal, and sunflower seeds, ensured that local children could continue enjoying their summer fun without worrying about their next meal.
Additionally, thanks to a generous grant, we were able to include fresh perishable items like apples, oranges, and cheese—helping kids get the nutrients they need to play, learn, and grow throughout the summer.
